'Eternity' director aping Hitchcock

THE Iza Calzado and Dingdong Dantes tandem gives another glowing performance as the star-crossed lovers, Milagros and Crisanto, in “Eternity”, which got a B rating from the Cinema Evaluation Board.

Direk Mark is aping Alfred Hitchcock in that he does cameo roles in his own films. Here, he plays a passerby that Iza bumps into in the streets of Vigan.

“Eternity” is grand romance done on an epic scale, something we haven’t seen on local screens for quite sometime. If you enjoyed “Moments of Love,” no doubt you will also like this film that has great commercial appeal. Here, it’s not only Iza and Dingdong who give competent performances as sweethearts who face various trials and tribulations during the Spanish regime. Jennylyn Mercado and Mark Herras are equally good as their counterparts in the present. They get great support from Hilda Koronel as Iza’s mom, Jaclyn Jose as Dingdong’s mom who puts a curse on Iza that affects future generations, Jaime Fabregas as the Spanish priest who is accidentally killed by Dingdong, and Bobby Andrews as the guardia civil commandant desperately in love with Iza and tries to rape her, with tragic results. Also appearing in guest roles are Richard Gomez as the fencing master and Bibeth Orteza as the medium who discerns the link of Mark and Jen to Dingdong and Iza.

HIlda and Iza look so good on screen as mother and daughter. Bagay silang mag-ina. We can’t help but think that they’d be perfect in a remake of “Insiang,” with Hilda now doing the Mona Lisa role as the randy mom and Iza as the beleaguered Insiang.

Production values are definitely better than the usual, particularly the period production design. But the film is a bit overscored, the music swelling and intruding even in scenes that could have been more moving and effective if they were silent.
