Si ‘M’ ang dapat na Bakekang

HINDI siya maramot sa project. Nang lapitan siya ng GMA-7 para hingin ang Bakekang ay hindi niya nakuhang pahindian si Wilma Galvante,” says writer/director Carlo J. Caparas who opened the presentation for the press of the new TV series, referring to his wife, the still ravishing Donna Villa who is considered the quintessential Darling of the Press.

In fact, Bakekang was supposed to be the Christmas offering, if not the film entry for the Metro Manila Film Festival, of Golden Lions Film Productions which the husband and wife own. It is among the hundreds of serialized komiks material of Carlo J. during the late 70s. Its popularity inspired a major studio to adapt on the screen with no less than Nora Aunor in the title role.

Whether it was a hit movie was a different story.

What prompted Carlo to shift from action heroes to a tale of an ugly girl who allowed herself to be pregnant just to have a beautiful baby?

“Kinausap ako ni Don Ramon Roces, may-ari noon ng Atlas Publications na gumawa ng isang nobela tungkol sa babaeng inaapi pero lumalaban. I liked the idea and I was sure many women can relate to the theme. Nagkataon pa na ang women’s empowerment is more felt nowadays than when I wrote Bakekang. Hindi naluluma ang ganitong tema at sa bawa’t Pinoy ay may Bakekang na makikita,” the megman, who is popular in his dark shades and cap, says. “At ang totoo, hindi Bakekang ang original title ng story ko. Ang working title niya noon ay Starlet at Jacoba ang tunay na pangalan ni Bakekang.”

The Caparas couple is pleased with the choice of Sunshine Dizon as the title roler. Her face (in prosthetics) and shapeless figure as she walked down the stairs that night escorted by Jay Manalo became her. In the story, she bore two daughters, the pretty one played by Lovi while the ugly one is portrayed by Yasmien Kurdi.

Sunshine sung the very playful song, “Movie Fan” as theme and we are just wondering how its original singer Celeste Legaspi would react on her (Sunshine’s) version.

Incidentally, there are jokes sent through text about Bakekang. One of them reads:

“Hindi po si Sunshine ang dapat gumanap ng Bakekang kundi si M…(known newscaster of GMA-7).

Bakekang now airs weeknights.
