Angel Locsin update

At around this time last year, Angel Locsin was in her sickbed, reeling from a bad bout with dengue. The dreaded disease felled her in the US, where she was filming a starrer with Richard Gutierrez.

Today, however, to say that Angel is in the pink of health is an understatement. She topbills the Metro Filmfest entry with Richard, Regal Films’ Mano Po 5: Gua Ai Di. That day of the presscon for the movie, she just got home at 6 a.m. from a taping of her upcoming GMA 7 reality show with Robin Padilla, Asian Treasures. Right after the late morning presscon, she was due to head straight to a mall to promote a skin product, of which she is the endorser.

Someone right smack in the throes of middle age (ouch!) will ask: How come she doesn’t get sick? Other stars her age end up in the hospital due to fatigue. But not Angel. What powers does the girl have?

"I take vitamins," she smiles, as if staying up on her toes despite a killer schedule is the most natural thing in the world.

Of course, at 20, age is on her side. But there’s something else, folks. That something is discipline.

When Robin practically babied her after someone accidentally bumped her on the set and Angel fell on her knees, she was the first to brush everyone’s fears aside.

"I’m okay," she said. As simple as that. No fuss, no ifs and buts. The extra attention the accident brought about embarrassed Angel. "Robin is very caring. But I might get spoiled," she explains. And so the show went on after Robin quickly devised a concoction of eficascent oil, Omega pain killer, etc. and applied it as poultice over the bruised part of Angel’s body.

When Richard gave up his seat for Angel on the set of Mano Po 5, she balked once more. She already told Richard to take a seat as she’d rather stand up.

"I wanted him to sit down. I didn’t want anyone to think I was so pa-girl," says Angel.

Told that she is her home network GMA 7’s fair-haired girl, Angel demurs and refuses to take credit for it.

"I think it’s just a matter of picking someone who best fits for the role," she relates.

This attitude spells the difference between a here-today-gone-tomorrow performer and someone whose star will continue to shine bright for years to come.

Angel indeed thinks in the future tense these days, with her list of preferred leading men (aside from Richard, that is) clear in her head. High on that list is Piolo Pascual, Angel’s partner in the ongoing San Mig coffee commercial.

"Working with him proved that we have rapport," she explains. "I know I will learn a lot from Piolo."

Also on Angel’s wish list of leading men are Jericho Rosales and Dingdong Dantes.

Angel would have loved working with the late Fernando Poe Jr. But all she can do now is turn green with envy whenever she sees fellow Mano Po 5 star Boots Anson-Roa in an old movie with Da King.

Angel’s regret in this area, however, is easy to ignore in the face of all the bright things lined up for her next year.

She will leave for Bangkok next month and visit Thailand for the first time to tape episodes of Asian Treasures, which will replace Captain Barbell. She still has a Valentine movie, again with Richard.

"I must work hard to pay the bills for my house," she says, referring to a P9-M mansion she is building for her family (target date of completion is February).

She can still count on her Oyo (Sotto) to be there, of course. The lovebirds are now enjoying a much-needed break in Bantayan Island (Cebu), where they will stay for three days. On the 29th, they will head straight to Loyola Memorial Park, Parañaque, to join the family in marking Miko Sotto’s third death anniversary.

"Oyo and I haven’t seen each other for weeks," Angel reveals. No wonder they’re making up for all the lost time through their Bantayan getaway.

But she has no reason to complain. When you have movie and TV assignments falling on your lap; when your face is flashed on TV every commercial break, with an avalanche of endorsements to boot, what more can you ask for?

"An acting award would be a nice Christmas gift," she replies without batting an eyelash.

That’s a wish only the Metro Filmfest judges can give come awards tomorrow night. Link is here.
