GMA Network sinenovela

GMA Network will once again prove that it is the prime mover in Philippine television as it continues to change the landscape of local entertainment programming. This time, it makes another landmark move as it introduces the newest programming genre that would soon make waves on local TV: the “sinenovela.”

In line with its commitment to bringing innovative and superior quality entertainment, GMA-7 will soon air the TV serialization of five well-loved movies: “Saan Darating ang Umaga,” “Dapat Ka Bang Mahalin,” “Sinasamba Kita,” “Kung Mahawi Man ang Ulap,” and “Gaano Kadalas ang Minsan.” Under the umbrella title “sinenovela,” five hit movie titles released by Viva Films will be turned by GMA-7 into blockbuster TV dramas through the creative genius of its pool of talented writers. GMA-7 has also enlisted the help of the most-respected film and television directors to take the helm in these sinenovelas, and plans to gather today’s biggest stars to once again bring to life the unforgettable characters in each one.

Who could forget “Sinasamba Kita,” which starred Lorna Tolentino and Vilma Santos, a compelling story about half-sisters—with the illegitimate younger daughter adoring her older sister—who later become rivals in love and life? And who didn’t fall in love with “Dapat Ka Bang Mahalin,” wherein Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion portrayed lovers who got married at a young age, whose relationship eventually collapsed but will realize later how strong their love is in the end. Also memorable was “Saan Darating ang Umaga,” a heart-wrenching masterpiece about how a child who became a family’s source of joy later unwittingly becomes the cause of all their grief, which starred the late Nida Blanca, Maricel Soriano, Nestor De Villa, and Jaypee De Guzman.

Two other star-studded blockbuster dramas—“Gaano Kadalas ang Minsan,” which is about a complex love triangle whose characters were portrayed by Vilma Santos, Dindo Fernando, and Hilda Koronel, and “Kung Mahawi Man ang Ulap,” a gripping family drama which featured a powerhouse cast that included Hilda Koronel, Christopher de Leon, Gloria Romero, Eddie Garcia, Amy Austria, Michael de Mesa, and Isabel Rivas—will also soon leave audiences riveted in their seats in the TV versions on GMA-7.

The sinenovelas are surely something to be excited about, since it would be a great chance for today’s generation to appreciate the movies that once made such an impact in the country’s film industry and the minds of movie-goers—this time through a daily series on the small screen. It also means a trip down memory lane for Philippine movie aficionados, albeit with a much more extensive storyline fit for TV dramas and with different but likewise talented artists portraying the characters with which they once identified. GMA-7 is sure to create another milestone in Philippine television with these soon-to-air sinenovelas. LINK is here.
