GMA sets record with Pacquiao fight and ‘Marimar’ specials

GMA Network made broadcast history once again with its television specials that registered skyrocketing ratings over the weekend.

The Kapuso Network’s takeoff commenced with the finale of the phenomenal primetime series Marimar that drew more than half of the Mega Manila viewers and recorded a stunning 52.6 percent TV household rating last March 14, based on overnight ratings data from AGB Nielsen.

The program opposite Marimar on ABS-CBN was dwarfed with a meager 17.3 percent.

The much-anticipated “Santibañez-Aldama nuptial,” showcased in the finale episode, had the highest rating of 56.4 percent at 10:18 p.m. On record, Marimar is the highest rating primetime series ever produced by GMA since 2001. Its 52.6 percent record went beyond Darna’s 51.7 recorded on April 7, 2005.

The Marimar fairy tale continued way beyond the finale-wedding episode. The special, Marimar Memories, aired over the Kapuso Network last March 16, posted a 28.4 percent TV household rating.

The special’s rating is incomparable to the single-digit figure managed by the opposite program on ABS-CBN.

Meanwhile, the Pacquiao-Marquez II: Unfinished Business aired over GMA-7 last March 16 also had phenomenal ratings.

As expected, Filipino boxing fans in Mega Manila area were glued to their television screens as shown by the 48.5 percent overnight TV household rating of the fight.

The main event, Manny Pacquiao’s rematch against Juan Miguel Marquez, recorded a spectacular overnight TV household rating of 62.4 percent! [source of news]
