The Echo movie, set for playdate in US theaters

As I’ve been saying, Iza Calzado has one foot into Hollywood with Yam Laranas’ The Echo now ready for playdates in US theaters.

“I’m excited,” said Iza. “I can hardly wait.”

If plans don’t get derailed, Iza will be participating in the so-called “Hollywood junket” (the same one Funfare is often invited to) in which she and the movie’s other stars will face the international press composed of journalists from different parts of the world (Asia, Australia, Europe, Latin America, etc.), some of whom can be, uh, “mean” and “intimidating.” Oh well, being used to the local press, Iza can handle the Hollywood counterpart with aplomb, I’m sure.

Here’s an additional report from Funfare’s Big Apple correspondent Edmund Silvestre (news editor of the New York-based The Filipino Reporter):

“It is done. The Echo is now getting ready for the world.”

That’s Yam Laranas in his blog, talking about his upcoming Hollywood directorial debut, The Echo, a remake of his acclaimed Filipino horror-thriller Sigaw that stars Richard Gutierrez, Angel Locsin, Jomari Yllana and Iza Calzado, who reprises her role for the Hollywood version.

Yam said that The Echo has wrapped up and is now awaiting playdate following weeks of post-production.

“It’s so much fun in post,” Yam writes in one of his blog entries during last month’s post-production. “I can see the movie coming alive...and the scares are great! We are color correcting scene per scene and shot by shot, and I should say that this has a different color palette than the original — better and way creepier.”

The sound?

“It’s fantastic!” he adds. “Half of the film’s storytelling is through sound. We’re doing really great. I love every time I check the work-in-progress sound mix in the theatre next door. This feels like my first movie. It’s fascinating.”

The Echo also stars Jesse Bradford (Flags of Our Fathers, Romeo & Juliet) with Amelia Warner (Quills, Aeon Flux), Pruitt Taylor Vince (Natural Born Killers, JFK), Carlos Leon (The Big Lebowski, The Replacement Killers) and Louis Linton (Lions for Lambs, Banking on Love).

Produced by Vertigo Entertainment, RightOff Entertainment, and QED International, the creepy poster says, “The Echo is from the executive producers of The Grudge and The Ring, two of the most successful Hollywood horrors that originated from Asia.”

The Echo was co-written by Yam and Eric Bernt (Romeo Must Die, Virtuosity).

In the film, Bradford plays a young ex-con who moves into an old apartment building where he encounters a domestic problem involving an abusive police officer who savagely beats his wife and daughter. When the ex-con tries to intervene, he becomes trapped in a mysterious curse.

The Echo was shot mostly in Toronto to where Iza had to fly back and forth from Manila last year, while shooting her top-rated GMA drama series Impostora.

Now, will The Echo follow the commercial success of The Grudge and The Ring? Will it make Yam the next Asian director to watch? Will it put Iza on Hollywood’s radar?

That remains to be seen. [source of news]
