GMA knows what’s best

IF reports are to be believed, the Marian Rivera -- Dingdong Dantes tandem might be sidetracked for a while.

This is bad news for their fans and supporters who religiously followed their successful teleseryes, Marimar and Dyesebel. But to some extent, this is an opportunity for Marian and Dingdong to explore new horizons outside their love team. Of course, there are pros and cons in their reported split up as love team.

For one, their tandem has already captured legions of fans. In fact, they have become household names. And undoubtedly, they complement to each other because of their good screen chemistry.

On the other hand, both Marian and Dingdong can challenge themselves how far they can go in showbiz without having to depend on each other. For sure, they want to prove that their popularity and staying power are not anchored on their tandem.

“Naku huwag na silang mag-drama ‘no?!,” sarcastically comments one writer.

Accordingly, the reported split-up stemmed from the dismal box-office result of their movie, “One True Love.” True or not, GMA knows what is best for its talents. Thus, the decision not to pair the two in their next project is strategically planned.

Others say that had their movie really clicked, they would be paired again. That is not farfetched.

If the tandem split-up is true, what awaits Marian and Dingdong after “One True Love”? Just asking…

Rufa Mae on Sam Milby: No malice

RUFA Mae Quinto is baffled as to why some quarters are making a big fuzz over her visit to the Sam Milby’s digs at Corinthian Hills in Pasig. “Sam and I are members of the same religious community at sabay kaming nagba-Bible study,” she says. Nagpapagawa kasi ako ng bagong bahay and everyone’s saying his new house is so beautiful at mabilis daw natapos kaya gusto kong makita at baka may mapulot akong ideas doon. What’s wrong with that naman, di ba? I just looked at it.”

So it’s not true that she has something to do with Sam’s breakup with Anne Curtis? Nakakagulat kasi when I went to visit Sam’s house, that’s two months ago na, ‘no? That time, ka-on ko pa si Bobby (her Hong Kong-based boyfriend.) E, kailan lang ba sila nag-split? It’s very recent, so for sure, wala akong kinalaman dun. Nakausap ko na nga si Anne and I assured her wala akong alam at all tungkol sa kanila ni Sam. She understood me naman at nag-sorry pa ngang na-damay ako sa issue. ‘Yung ibang writers kasi, nagha-hanap ng masisisi. Kung nagkikita man kami ni Sam, sa Bible study iyon and with us are sina Piolo Pascual, Mark Bautista, Direk Joyce Bernal and Erik Santos. Pero hindi kami nagdi-date, no?”

She says she’ll be loveless on Christmas. E-enjoy-in ko munang maging single.”

Dingdong Dantes is new darling of the press

WITHOUT a doubt, the male Darling of the Press award should go to Dingdong Dantes. For the second time around, he threw a very advanced Christmas party for the entertainment press who granted the actor's request to refrain from asking about his much-talked break-up with Karylle.

The Christmas party opened with a big bang reminiscent of a happy scene at Ophra's show---that of giving gifts for everyone in the audience. In Dingdong's case, everyone went home with a MyPhone cellphone, which the most eligible bachelor and one of the world's sexiest is currently endorsing.

In his opening remark, Dingdong said he is grateful for the support the press people is giving him and thanked the Lord for all the blessings which he is now sharing with the members of the fourth estate.

Generosity had no limit that evening where there were more prizes than the invited guests. Raffled off were television sets, washing machines, microwave oven, mini component, DVD players, digital cameras, Bench watches and for the top prize, Techno chrome watches which Lolit Solis, who helped organized the party, won.

With an over-abundance of gifts, some went home with more than one item. A must to carry is the beautifully packed Gran Matador which could one could drink while talking to My Phone set.

The success of One True Love at the box-office makes Dingdong a very bankable star. Also noticed by the critics is his very improved acting together with the felt performance by Iza Calzado.

Dingdong leaves for the USA first week of December with Marian Rivera for a show at the Shrine Auditorium. When he returns, he will start taping a new TV series, "Ang Babaing Hinugot" sa Aking Tad-yang.

Full Force Nature with Richard Gutierrez

Marian Rivera nagta-trabaho kahit naka-wheel chair

Tito, Vic and Joey reunite for movie 'Iskul Bukol: 20 Years After'

The best and formidable box-office triumvirate of showbiz – Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto and Joey de Leon will once again grace big screens with their comeback movie titled “Iskul Bukol: 20 Years After”.

“Iskul Bukol” the program that probably pioneered the situational comedies in the history of Philippine television was a great hit during the late ‘70s to ‘80s and is now one of the entries for this year’s 2008 Metro Manila Film Festival.

In a press conference for the movie, the trio even recounted their experiences during their “Iskul Bukol” days on TV and even shared the show’s history.

“’Yong Iskul Bukol walang pwedeng mag-claim kasi uso yan noong time na iyon. Iyong salit ay parang see you later-alligator, so school – iskul-bukol, nauso iyan noong mga time na ‘yon iyong hi there spider, may Gay and Pip pa, how’s sweet Gay and Pip parang mga ganoon uso iyan kaya ginamit lang namin,” de Leon said said.

For the record, “Iskul Bukol” on IBC-13 was the highest rating program during the late 70s. Iskul Bukol movies were also made one in 1977 and the Iskul Bukol (Freshmen) in 1980.

The trio said that young ones will also love to watch the newest movie adaptation of their sitcom since the parents of the youngster will definitely explain it to their kids.

“’Yong mga magulang alam nilang ipaliwanag ‘yon, de Leon said.

“In any school in the Philippines siguro maging sa ibang school laging mayroong nerd.

So ‘yon nakaka-relate pa din kahit paano ‘yong sa ngayon,” former senator Tito Sotto said.

“Iskul Bukol: 20 Years After” is the reunion film of the trio, the group was last seen in the silver screen almost two decades ago for the film “I Have 3 Eggs” in 1990.

The film will chronicle the events that happened in the two decades since the TV series, after the Escalera brothers and Ungasis have graduated from ‘Wanbol University.’

The reunion film aims to reintroduce Iskul Bukol to the present crop of viewers. And to make the story more exciting, some parts were shot in Cambodia.

The story involves the thrilling search for the powerful ‘Peseta,’ one of the remaining 30 pieces of Judas’s silver which reportedly gives immortality to anyone who possesses it.

Members of the cast of “Iskul Bukol: 20 Years After”, aside from the legendary three actors-comedians also include Bibeth Orteza, Jimmy Santos, Mely Tagasa as the strict teacher Ms. Tapia, Richie D’ Horsie as himself, Anthony Roquek as the former gay Tonet Macho and Mary Massab.

Today’s stars include Ryan Agoncillo, Robert Villar, Carlene Aguilar, Oyo Sotto, Gian Sotto, Keempee de Leon, Francine Prieto, Krista Ranillo, Pauleen Luna and Nicole Uysiuseng.

For the movie, Megastar Sharon Cuneta is also making a special appearance as Tito and Joey’s younger sister, Sharon Escalera.

“Iskul Bukol: 20 Years After” is a co-production of OctoArts Films, M-Zet Films and APT Entertainment.

Is Kyla leaving GMA-7?

IS Kyla leaving GMA-7 to move to ABS-CBN? "Hindi po, I have a contract with GMA until 2010 so I can't do that," she says.

But it's obvious she's unhappy with GMA as she has only one show, "SOP," when she was also hosting "Little Pop Superstar" before. "Well, we're going nga to ask for a meeting with GMA to ask kung anong plans nila for me. But right now, busy ako promoting my new album, 'Heart to Heart,' a followup to my album last year, 'Heartfelt'. It was introduced in 'SOP' last Sunday and to be launched by EMI Philippines to the public on Friday at SM Mall of Asia Main Atrium at 5 p.m. There will be album signing and photo ops plus free poster for every purchase of the CD."

"Heart to Heart" has a total of 15 great cuts, plus a bonus track of "My Grown- Up Christmas List" in time for the coming holidays. The first single and title song is a remake of a Kenny Loggins original, with Kyla doing her own R&B version. Other notable cuts are "Old Friend," ""Stay Awake," "I Miss You," "Misty Glass Window," "Bus Stop," and "Ribbon in the Sky." One song, "Back in Time," is her own composition with Jay-R and they do a duet of it recorded at Jay-R's own studio. Two other original songs are "You Make Me Feel" (also her own composition) and the touching "Tahan Na."

"Kyla has a lot of production savvy as she herself co-produced the album," says EMI Polyeast A&R manager Chito Ilagan. "She knows exactly how to deliver the songs even if all of them were given new arrangements. She made them all her own."

"After releasing six past albums, I want to show that I have grown artistically and professionally," says Kyla. "My seventh album is something I can be proud of not only as a singer but as a professional artist in all its aspects. I'm glad EMI gave me the chance to contribute all my creative inputs for this album that really means a lot to me."

EMI has great plans for Kyla. They're compiling best songs from her past albums and will market it in an album that will be released in China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Thailand in 2009. "Nag-hit kasi in Indonesia ang isa kong album, 'Not so Ordinary Girl,' by accident. Someone downloaded a song from there, 'Because of You,' and it became one of the top 10 hits there kaya nag-click ang album ko with them."

Kyla will also have a series of shows in small venues next year, culminating in a concert at the Araneta Coliseum in late 2009. She'll be taping her music video for "Heart to Heart" next week, directed by Treb Monteras, but she has no leading man yet. Why not get her own boyfriend, cager Rich Alvarez?

"I've long been trying to convince him but he refuses kasi mahiyain daw siya talaga."

Which of the songs in her new album will she dedicate to Rich? "'Ribbon in the Sky', ang favorite naming dalawa."

Manny Pacquiao still aspires to be a congressman

Even if he was, well, “TKO’d” by Darlene Antonino when he ran for congressman in GenSan during the 2007 elections, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao isn’t about to hang up his “political glove,” insisting that he’s running for the same position (presumably) in 2010.

He revealed this in an interview with editor-in-chief Jim Plouffe in the latest (December) issue of the Reader’s Digest which features Pacquiao on the cover, the second Filipino to be accorded that honor in barely three months, following Michael V. who graced the RD cover in its special issue on Asian comedy.

Question (by Plouffe): It seems the only time you’ve taken a real beating is when you went for public office.

Pacquiao: It was not the right time to run for office because I was in my prime in boxing. (The Filipino people) are looking at me as a role model in boxing. The time has come now. I think they will want me because I have a big heart.

Big words, those. If Pacquiao can translate words into action, well and good. But he’s right that his fans (including this one) prefer him to stay inside the ring and not somewhere else, not in the political arena or in the movies (his “starrers” were flops, including films supposedly “inspired” by his success story).

But he’s undaunted in his quest for a space in politics.

Question: So politics is still in the cards?

Pacquiao: Absolutely. I want to be a congressman. (The Filipino people) idolize me in boxing. I want them to idolize me in terms of public service. (I believe in) social accountability. I can change the system. I’m not like some politicians who can be corrupt. I have money and I am satisfied with what I have earned from bloody work like boxing. What I want to do is bring government money back to the poor people.” (Adding that what the Philippines needs the most are “politicians with big hearts to help the people who are suffering.”)

Bigger words, those. I read the RD story with mounting excitement, waiting for Pacquiao to name the “politicians who can be corrupt” but he disappointed me (and you, too, I guess) by not naming one at all.

Anyway, the Reader’s Digest (with Pacquiao looking invincible on the cover, as if taunting Oscar dela Hoya with whom he’s matched in a non-title bout in Las Vegas on Dec. 6) is a collector’s item. Buy a copy before it gets out of stock.

Ramiel Malubay in Ogie Alcasid concert

Now in her 20s, she’s mom to two kids.

Last Sunday, when she guested sa Showbiz Central with Mickey, and brother Kiko, Matet showed her respect to both her mom, Nora Aunor and Ate (Lotlot de Leon), when she begged off from answering questions na may kinalaman sa kung may awayang namamagitan sa dalawa.

22nd Star Awards for Television this Sunday

Angelika dela Cruz, balak mag-breastfeed

Jolina Magdangal shops on eBay

eBay Style Ambassador Jolina Magdangal invited several media to her Camper recently in an early birthday celebration to thank them for their support. Jolina showed off items she brought on eBay used to decorate her Camper (nicknamed ‘BT’), which made her life on the road enjoyable.

Jolina says, ‘BT has been my second home for the past five years. He has been my faithful companion at various time of the day — from early morning and noon time stints on Unang Hirit to afternoon mall shows and evening performance. Recently, I’ve decided to refurbish BT with new appliances to make it even more like home. Since I hardly have any time to shop at the malls, my favorite shopping destination is eBay.’

‘eBay, the world’s largest on-line marketplace has millions of items up for sale at any given time from all over the world. You can also shop for home appliances on eBay by browsing through popular categories such as the Electronics and Home & Garden.’

Some items she bought recently included Nintendo Wii, an 800-lumens projector (for watching movies during breaks), a chocolate fountain and donut maker (for entertaining friends), a molave console table, a Hello Kitty water jug and an air purifier.

Dingdong Dantes updates

Nakatutuwa.

Walang umuwing luhaan that night.

Lahat ay may kanya-kanyang bitbit.

This is Dingdong’s way of saying “thank you” rin for all the support he’s been getting from the press mula noong nag-uumpisa pa lang siya sa TGIS, at sa kabila ng ilang kontrobersiyang pinagdaraanan ng aktor, nanatiling buo ang suporta sa kanya ng movie press.

* * *

Although hindi nito ipinagkailang each day is a process.

Hindi pa sila nagkikitang muli ni Karylle, after the break-up pero kung anuman ang magaganap sa muli nilang pagmi-meet, naka-handa naman daw siya at wini-welcome niya ang ideyang ito, the fact that they still are partners in their business.

Jay-R investments

R & B Prince Jay R lost millions when he invested in the club Rock Candy at Glorietta 2, which was destroyed in a blast last year. “I never recovered my capital as it happened at a time when the club was already picking up,” he says. “And we were never compensated at all kasi under investigation pa raw. So I just invested in a Mini-stop outlet at Wilson St. in Greenhills and in my own recording studio, Homeworkz Records that released my new Christmas album, ‘Holiday of Love.’ I’m now also into talent management. I’m launching a new band, Wobb, with my niece Desiree Joy Poblete as lead vocalist. They’re recording now their first album with Homeworkz and I’m very proud of their original songs na maghi-hit talaga.”

By the time you read this, Jay R has left to do shows with Pops Fernandez in Chicago and Atlantic City. “I finished shooting muna all my scenes for ‘Desperadas 2’ where I reprise my character as Ruffa Gutierrez’ boyfriend. I’ll be gone for two weeks kaya hindi rin muna ako makakapag-taping for my role as Pato in GMA-7’s primetime show, ‘La Lola’. Pinalabas nilang nag-abroad muna ako after I get broken hearted kay Angelika de la Cruz. Iyak naman nang iyak si Gary, the gay character played by Keempee de Leon, kasi na-in love siya sa’kin.”

Jay R’s Christmas album has 14 well-loved yuletide songs that help spread Christmas cheer, all digitally recorded and given new arrangement with a fusion of jazz and R&B. He’s sharing the proceeds from its sales with the GMA Kapuso Foundation to share his blessings with the needy this holiday season. The songs include “O Holy Night,” “Do You See What I See,” “Give Love on Christmas Days,” “Sleigh Ride,” “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year”, “White Christmas”, “Winter Wonderland”, “Christmas Song,” “This Christmas,” “Santa Baby,” “Little Drummer Boy,” “Tito Reny,” and “Spread the Love.” The album features guest performances from Amber, Kris Lawrence, his sister Jing and South Border keyboardist Jay Durias. Jay R himself did a lot of the string and horn arrangements. His dream of cultivating an international career may seen country with the release of an album he’s now doing for World Peace Federation, a collaborative effort with Iya Villania that will be launched in Japan and distributed in the organization’s 70 member countries.

Patrick Garcia nag-aaral sa New York University?

May ganoon?

The contract will take effect immediately kung kaya’t may nakahandang teleserye kaagad para kay Diet.

As we all know, si Mr. M ang tumatayong tatay ng talents ng Star Ma-gic. Sampung taon ding naging Kapamilya si Diet. Pero ganyan talaga, each one has to move on, and seek bigger opportunities.

Ma-emosyon.

Wala raw nagsabi sa kanya beforehand na wala siyang gagawin for that show.

Cesar Apolinario explores nature

Director Cesar Apolinario (Banal) pays tribute to Ishmael Bernal’s Himala, recently given the CNN APSA Viewers Choice Award for Best Asia-Pacific Film of all Time.

He revisits one of the most scenic locations in the country — the sand dunes of Ilocos Norte where Himala was filmed. In his guest appearance on GMA 7’s Born to be Wild, Cesar directs his own adventure as he explores the many miracles of the natural world. Sand dunes — hills of dirt commonly found in desert countries — can be in the Philippines.

These mounds of dust served as the glorious backdrop for Pinoy movie greats like Himala and Panday and foreign films like Born on the Fourth of July. Meticulously planning and executing each shot in the featured Philippine desert, Cesar uses his talent to create his own mini-masterpiece proving that in the midst of nature’s wonders, one can cry out, “May himala!”

Also in tonight’s episode, Born to be Wild’s resident veterinarian gets an upclose encounter with giants. It’s uncommon to see enormous animals walking about in the Philippines. Elephants, the Earth’s largest land mammals, are usually pictured wandering the deserts of Africa, or serving kings in other parts of Asia. But did you know that elephants once roamed our lands? In Cagayan, remains of elephant ancestors were found. Similar fossils have been discovered in Mindanao, Iloilo and Rizal.

Doc Ferds traces the history of these creatures which once walked the Philippines. His journey takes him to Thailand where living elephants still walk the streets. In a retirement home for these amazing giants, Doc Ferds gets an awesome encounter, and even becomes doctor for the day. Doc gets playful with baby elephants, gives them a good scrub down and plays elephant caretaker, even learning how to ride these gentle beasts.

Born to be Wild airs tonight after Saksi.

Marian Rivera still affected by Dingdong-Karylle breakup

MARIAN Rivera and Dingdong Dantes were the special guests at the finale of "Showbiz Central" last Sunday and the fans of their love team were screaming wildly inside the studio as Pia Guanio interviewed them to promote their movie "One True Love." Pia asked Marian if she's not affected by the intrigues accusing her as the culprit in the Dingdong-Karylle breakup.

Aside from 'One True Love,' I'm also in 'Desperadas 2' and 'Shake, Rattle & Roll 10'.

Is it true she has built a 12-door apartment in Cavite? "Yes, for investment. Kasi ganun din ang mother ko, e."

How much does Dingdong support her? "He has always been there.

How about Dingdong? How much does Marian support him? "Kitang-kita ang suporta namin sa isa't isa lalo na in this movie which is very crucial for us kasi first movie namin ito after two hit TV shows," he says. "Alam namin, maghihiwalay rin kami balang araw but I'm thankful nandun ako when she started sa 'Marimar' na naging turning point sa buhay at career niya and I've always been there to guide her."

What's the best thing about Marian? "Lagi siyang may bagong ipinakikita. Ako nga, I always wonder, like in this movie: Ano naman kaya ang ipakikita niya rito?"

Pia asked them to play a game. Pia will ask a question and instead of them answering for themselves, Dingdong will answer for Marian and vice versa. But obviously, no one understood the mechanics of the game, not even Pia herself, because when she asked questions, Dingdong and Marian still answered for themselves and not each other.

To Dingdong: What do you do that makes Marian blush? Instead of Marian answering Dingdong who answered: "When I tell her: you look good today." To which Marian said: "Kasi mababaw na tao lang ako."

To Marian: What among the things you've given to Dingdong did he appreciate the most? Dingdong is supposed to answer but again, it's Marian who answered: "Shorts." Dingdong added: "A pair of short shorts.

I don’t hate, I dislike -- Richard

Pero ani Chard, “I don’t hate, I dislike,” sabay tawa.

Very positive raw ang outlook niya ngayon at walang ibang focus kundi career at pamilya..

“The family doesn’t even talk about it. Right now, I’m focused on my next project at sa health ng parents ko.

Magkikita kami dapat sa L.A., then we’re supposed to go to Houston.

“Pero kami ni Elvis, nauna na sa L.A. Mom was supposed to follow.”

“Imbes na gumawa tayo ng tsismis, let’s all pray for my parents.”

“She’s a strong woman. We will keep her strong and we will keep her happy,” pangako pa ni Chard.

As for Tito Eddie, maayos na raw ang lagay nito ngayon.

“It’s a fresh start for him, ramdam namin na he’s energized after the operation.”

By end of this month daw ito magsisimulang mapanood sa Kapuso channel.

Ito yung follow-up sa first team-up nilang For the First Time ng Star Cinema.

“Namaniobra, eh, end of next year pa siguro,” natatawang sey ni Chard.

“Years from now, ’pag naging big stars na sila at maalala kaming sumuporta sa kanila, masaya na ako.

Any comment?

I let other people do it for me.

“At this point, and even my dad realizes na dapat nang makialam.

Iwa Moto's dad has a month to live

IWA Moto just returned from Japan to visit her Japanese dad who's afflicted with the Big C. "His condition is very bad at kung madadala ko lang siya rito so my mom, sister and I can take care of him, ginawa ko na. Yung liver cancer niya, nag-spread na to his bone and they say he might last until next month na lang daw. But he himself doesn't know it. No one has the courage to tell him. He continues to hope that God will heal him and that he'd last for two more years daw so he can make up naman daw sa pagkukulang niya sa amin kasi matagal talaga kaming hindi nagkita. It's hard. Masakit talaga, but I have to return home here na kasi nga may trabahong naghihintay sa akin. I continue to pray na sana, mabigyan pa siya ng pag-asa."

In "Luna Mystika," she plays another villain role as Donita, the cousin of Luna (Heart Evangelista) who is so mean and nasty. She has an ardent suitor in Lucas (Jace Flores of "Survivor") but she's in love with Dexter (Mark Anthony Fernandez) who, in turn, is in love with Luna. But naturally, the scheming Iwa will do everyting to snatch him away for herself. Is she capable of doing this in real life?

"No. I won't go to the extent na aagawin ko siya sa iba."

In real life, she has a non-showbiz boyfriend, Michael Ablan.

Is she ready to settle down with him? "No. Mag-iisang taon pa lang kaming on. And I still need to work for my family. But as of now, I really like him kasi mabait siya and he's not the typical guy who's just after sex."

Is she quite content in playing villain roles? "Okay lang, basta laging may trabaho. Let's face it, not everyone these days has assignments. Buti nga ako, hindi nababakante. Kaya kahit contravida role, tinatanggap ko. Alangan namang maghintay pa kong gawin nila akong bida. Pero malay natin, someday, mabigyan din ako ng break as bida, like what happened to Katrina Halili na nakilala muna as villain din, di ba? Basta ang mahalaga, maipakita mo munang magaling kang artista."

Regine, Ogie can't visit Michelle

HOW does Regine Velasquez feel now that her beau, Ogie Alcasid, is playing a girl in "Desperadas 2"? Has she seen him in drag? "Oh yes, lagi niyang pinadadala sa'kin sa cell ang photo niya tuwing may shooting silang babae siya," she says at the launching of her new album, "Low Key," her first with Universal Records. "I'm proud of him, very pretty siya. Magaling ang nagme-make up sa kanya.

How does she feel about Ogie's kissing scene with his leading man, Carlo Guevarra? "I told him that when he told me may wedding scene sila. Sabi pa niya, bakit? Sabi ko naman, may wedding, e. Di may kiss the bride. Okay lang naman. Part ng trabaho niya 'yun as an actress. Actress daw, o."

Will she and Ogie be going to Sydney to visit Michelle and his daughters come Christmas? "No. He can't leave kasi nga may entry siya sa filmfest, di ba? He'll join the Parade of Stars tapos, may awards night.

How about her, how is she preparing for her "Totoy Bato" series with Robin Padilla? "I'm doing boxing now as part of my training para if they want me to do some action stuff when we start taping the show, di ready na ako. Enjoy talaga ako kasi I'm so tamad, e masarap pala 'yung may sinusuntok-suntok ka sa umaga. It also helps me to lose some weight kasi nagpapapayat talaga ako for our 'Divas 4 Divas' concert nina Kuh, Zsa Zsa and Pops sa Araneta Coliseum."

Regine's new album is titled "Low Key" as it features her in a much toned down performance. "I've long wanted to do this kind of album na no birit, hindi ako sumisigaw, something more tender and heartwarming so, finally, heto na yun. It has 18 songs na piling-pili. It this would click, then, I hope there will be a part 2 kasi ang dami ko pang gustong i-record na songs sa ganitong paraang smooth and easy."

The songs are "Tell Me that You Love Me," "And I Love You So," "Id Rather Leave While I'm in Love," "I Never Dreamed Someone Like You Could Love Someone Like Me," "No Walls No Ceilings No Floors," "Good Friend," "How Can I Tell You," "Of All the Things," "Longer," "At 17," "She's Always a Woman", "Never be The Same," "Strawberry Fields Forever," "Weeping Willows," "Leader of the Band," "Walk in Love," "Clouds across the Moon," and a bonus Yuletide track, "Christmas" with Jim Brickman. The album comes in a beautiful package of two discs with minus one. You can get free collectible Regine posters when you buy it. Regine will launch it formally at SOP on next Sunday, November 23.

Pauleen Luna: Lessons from a tragedy

The show must go on, even when a family tragedy threatens to tear your world apart. Pauleen Luna learned this painful lesson when her maternal grandmother, Merceditas Jimenez, died at the hands of a still unnamed gunman in the morning of her first taping day for GMA 7’s new series Luna Mystica.

“The tragedy tested my professionalism,” she looks back. “I’ve given my word that I will show up for work. But then this had to happen. It was like a baptism of fire for me.”

Eyes weary from crying, body weak with sorrow, Pauleen reported on the set, where her co-stars, Heart Evangelista, Mark Anthony Fernandez and others embraced her and held her hand in sympathy.

If there’s one good thing that came out of the tragedy, it is the way it has taught Pauleen a couple of lessons.

“Life is short and we have to do what we can today, while we still can,” she muses.

Indeed, 30 minutes after she talked to her grandma on the phone, the old lady died — without saying goodbye.

Pauleen’s only explanation: “God must have taken her because He wants her to be happy.”

Now all that’s left for this Lola’s Girl are sweet memories. Pauleen’s heart swelled when she discovered piles and piles of articles about her, plus notebooks with her on the cover, in her late grandma’s house. The old lady never told Pauleen about the collection of mementos. But she kept it like a treasure neatly tucked away among her keepsakes.

Did her grandma keep it to surprise Pauleen someday? Did the old lady leaf through the articles and gaze at her granddaughter’s smiling picture on the notebook now and then? Now, no one will ever know.

“She always had food for my friends on the set. One day she’d give me perfume; another day, it would be food again,” adds Pauleen.

To the very end, the doting grandma was thinking of her dear granddaughter. Pauleen got the surprise of her life when someone delivered her favorite food, like lumpiang ubod, for her her 20th birthday days ago. The sender: Pauleen’s grandma.

Pauleen says she felt her grandma’s presence three days after she died.

“The aircon was only at low cool but the room was so cold! And the phone – it kept ringing and ringing at 4 a.m.! Then, I felt someone pulling my blanket. I looked, but no one was there.”

You can’t blame Pauleen if she didn’t feel like making people laugh on Eat Bulaga! for a week.

“I would be a hypocrite if I showed up and cracked jokes,” she relates.

Pauleen was never wanting in friends who ran to her side. When he learned about it while he was in Malaysia, Pauleen’s former boyfriend Sherwin Gatchalian flew to her side. The news did not come from Pauleen. It came from his concerned staff at the city mayor’s office in Bulacan.

He was not alone. His brothers, Pauleen’s showbiz and nonshowbiz friends came. Pauleen’s best friend Ruby Rodriguez was one of the first to rush to her side.

Not everything is dark and gloomy in Pauleen’s world now though. The bright side is her reconciliation with Michelle Madrigal, more than two years after they had a rift.

The root cause is their former boyfriend JC de Vera.

“It was just a misunderstanding,” says Pauleen. “I called Michelle up and we listened to each other. Now there’s peace. We’ve agreed not to talk about the misunderstanding anymore.”

It’s just as well. Pauleen and Michelle play friends on Luna Mystica (to premiere Monday). It’s a role they can play better if they have no hard feelings towards each other.

Now that Pauleen has finally cast this burden off her back, her loving grandma — wherever she is — must be smiling from ear to ear.

Kahit walang degree, Janno Gibbs magaling na teacher

It’s a typical classroom ambience: May chalkboard, books on the shelves, and just about any educational device you can find. Ito ang imposing set ng the returning Kakasa Ka Ba sa Grade 5? on GMA 7 with host Janno Gibbs acting as a teacher.

Oo naman dahil admittedly, he cannot be a student. Like a guinea pig in a science lab, nagkaroon ako ng tsansang maging kalahok sa dry-run ng nasabing educational game show patterned after Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?

Off-cam, hindi ikinahihiya ni Janno that he, as well as his wife Bing Loyzaga, never went to college. Malakas daw kasi ang kaway ng showbiz, but he would have pursued masscom (he graduated high school from Lourdes School). Kaya raw gano’n na lang ang ibinibigay nilang suporta sa panganay nilang anak, si Alyssa, now in third year college taking up a pre-med course.

Despite Janno being a non-college degree holder, nakakabilib that he’s a learned man judging even from the casual talks that he engages in. Via his returning show, ginagamit ito ni Janno as a refreshing back-to-school experience, re-learning his grade school lessons already relegated to his academic past.

I, too, had so much fun during the dry-run. Feeling ko, I rode a time machine that transported me back to 1973 noong Grade V ako at the Sta. Clara Parish School, with such honors, modesty aside, that I received.

Luna Mystica to pilot on Monday

Ayon naman kay Mark: “Astig si Heart, she’s a lady and a good leading lady. Hindi pa kami masyadong close, but she never makes me feel awkward. She’s hospitable and so formal with me at she welcomes me agad.”

Joseph Bitangcol’s daring career move

Go ahead, rub your eyes. That’s former teenybopper Joseph Bitangcol staring at you, topless and leaning casually against a wall. He’s the same guy who romanced Sandara Park in SCQ Reload, the same one who tried his hand at comedy in D Lucky Ones.

What happened? Somewhere along the way, Joseph decided he’d better do something different to stand out among the sea of faces in showbiz.

So he decided to go daring as a fresh high school graduate who falls in love with a fisherman (Polo Ravales) in Walang Kawala.

The film, says its producer Manny Valera, has something more to it than a gay theme. Yes, the romantic trysts in the beach burn with passion.

But that’s not all there is to Walang Kawala, which opens today in Metro Manila, Bacolod and Cebu.

“The daring scenes were essential to tackling the timely issue of human trafficking. It’s a mirror to society, a revelation of the purity of real love and the dark side and weakness of people,” explains its director, Joel Lamangan.

Joseph didn’t enter the picture with eyes closed. He hesitated at first, since some scenes see him locking lips with Polo. He also performs a macho dance and goes completely naked with Polo.

Direk Joel allayed Joseph’s fears. Direk Joel told Joseph, “After seeing this film, people will regard you as a serious actor.”
Joseph took one big gulp and said yes, he will do it.

“I don’t think I’ll get typecast in gay roles because the film is not just about being gay,” says Joseph.

Look at Dennis Trillo, who played a gay in the acclaimed Aishite Imasu. The guy’s playing the macho Gagambino these days.

Look at Baron Geisler, who also portrayed a member of the third sex in Jay. The role even gave him an award.

Direk Joel is confident critics will sit up and notice Joseph (and Polo) after the film is shown.

Joseph doesn’t think people will question his masculinity because of his role. He is as comfortable as can be about this.

Joseph has a Japanese-Korean-Filipino girlfriend who studies at College of St. Benilde.

The similarity between Joseph’s girl, Nami Kim, and his former flame Sandara Park, is obvious. Both have Korean blood — albeit to a lesser degree in Nami Kim’s case.

Would Sandara get the shock of her life when he sees Joseph in his naked glory in Walang Kawala? Joseph shrugs.

All he knows is that he’s making a good career move. And most career moves — especially ones involving a drastic change of image like this — entails risk.

Joseph is taking that risk. And he hopes that in venturing into the untried and untested, he will gain just-as-meaty roles he can sink his teeth into.

Marian Rivera, sinungaling?

Sinungaling si Marian Rivera. Why didn’t she answer the question directly kung nasaan siya nu’ng bandang 6 p.m. nu’ng Nov. 1?

“Tsinek daw niya ’yung 12-door apartment. The whole day ba niyang tinitigan kung nagkulang ng isang pinto?”

(Inamin ni Dingdong sa press visit ng One True Love na nasa Sonya’s siya that time, pero ‘with other people’ raw, not Marian. — IFF)

Richard Gutierrez's show ends

RICHARD Gutierrez’s hard hitting action series, “Codename: Asero” is ending this week and he says its last few nights are guaranteed to excite all viewers as each episode is jampacked with slambang stunts and fight scenes never before scene on local TV. “Asero” is a cyborg, half man-half machine, and this is the first time we had such a hero in Philippine television. His enemies are from the camp of the mysterious Zeus (Richard Gomez.)

“The action-filled finale took us two straight days to shoot,” says Richard. “Kahit pagod na kami, sige pa rin just to make sure it’s going to be worth it for the viewers. Its be very tiring and taxing, pero proud ako dahil hindi kami mapapahiya sa audience as we offer first rate entertainment. Asero is one of the best and most difficult roles I’ve played dahil dual roles ako bale rito as Asero and also as Grecko Abesamis.”

He wants to thank all his co-stars in the show: Heart Evangelista, Richard Gomez, Carmina Villaroel, Janno Gibbs, Michael V, Francine Prieto, Bubbles Paraiso, Paolo Contis, Ehra Madrigal, Rhian Ramos, Chynna Ortaleza, Joko Diaz, Joanne Quintas, Sheree, Jenny Miller, Caridad Sanchez, Rainier Castillo, Marky Cielo, Ysa Villar, Martin de los Santos, Bobby Andrews and his brothers Ramon Christopher, Rocky and Elvis Gutierrez. “Lahat sila, nakatulong para sa ikagaganda ng show na talaga namang naging maganda ang rating during its entire run,” adds Richard. “I also want to thank our directors, Mark Reyes and Mike Tuviera, for allowing me to share my ideas with them, especially in staging and choreographing our action scenes. Pareho silang mahusay.”

In all fairness to Richard, he excels not only in the action scenes where he does his own stunts and gets to show his dexterity with guns and with the martial arts, but also in his dramatic scenes. After this, he’ll be playing the swashbuckling role of the legendary Zorro in his next series. He’s also starting the shooting of his new movie with KC Concepcion for GMA Films, titled “Save the Best for Last” written and directed by Joey Reyes, in which he’d be singing the theme song with KC. “But before anything else, sana huwag nilang kalimutan ang climactic conclusion ng ‘Asero’ this week and on its last day, November 14,” he adds. “I promise, hindi sila magsisisi.”

Dingdong Dantes says sorry

Narito ang sinabi ng aktor: “Once and for all, I would like to put an end to the many speculations, many talks and many questions about a very personal matter in my life right now. It is affecting people who are very dear to me.

“I admit that I had a relationship that may have taken a wrong turn and for this, I am sorry. The respect and the care will always remain. That is why knowing someone is hurting, hurts me even more.

Please give us space and the privacy that we need to heal and to move on with the decision that has been made.

“Please blame no one because that would be very unfair. Our shortcomings, our differences and our faults remain as we heal because above everything, at the end of the day, it is the respect for the ones we love that truly matters. Salamat po.”

Kahapon, lumabas naman sa kolum ni Ricky Lo sa isang broadsheet ang exclusive interview kay Karylle kung saan, for the first time ay nagsalita na siya hinggil sa breakup.

Ayon sa panayam, end of September pa sila nag-hiwalay. It was a mutual decision, pero narating daw niya ang nasabing desisyon after a long process.

As for the reason ng break-up, medyo malabo ang statement ni Karylle.

“Well, for me, there were many reasons that can’t be summed up in just one statement. It’s hard to trivialize things na, you know, this is the only reason and it’s up to the people to figure it out, na bahala na kayong intindihin.

“Maraming rason kasi, eh. You know, even if we keep on explaining or making kuwento, it’s only the two of us who know everything. People won’t get the whole story,” she said.

Inamin din ng actress-singer na pinakamasakit na ito sa lahat ng breakups niya (she has had three) at aniya, “times 10” more painful.

Tinanong din si Karylle kung naging faithful ba sa kanya si Dingdong at sagot niya, “I asked him and he said he never cheated on me and I trusted him.”

And the winner is…Bayani Fernando or BF for short.

Ipalalabas na ito simula Nov. 16 (Sundays) 8-9 a.m. on C/S 9 and it will be hosted by five young promising talents from Marikina, Noelle, Halley, Aumar, Dense and Ingrid!

* * *

It’s nice to see Phil Younghusband again sa finale ng Celebrity Duets. Tuloy na pala ang pag-uwi niya sa England at the end of this month.

He will definitely be back next year dito sa Phils to try his luck in showbiz.

Siguradong mami-miss ng marami si Phil pag-alis nito and they will definitely wait for his return next year!

Hahaha.

And in fairness, may “ipagmamalaki” naman ang Marco, huh! Hahaha!

It's about love for two discreet gay men, at may backdrop na human trafficking na totoong nagaganap in real life.

For us, this is one of Polo's better performances on the big screen.

Kaiinisan mo talaga ang Urian and Star Awards best supporting actor this year.

Hindi na kami magtataka kung maghi-hit ito sa box office sa opening day nito on November 12 sa Robinson’s Galeria, Robinson’s Ermita, Gateway, Isetann Recto, at New Cinema Cebu.

Produced by DMV Entertainment ni Manny Valera at co-producers din sina Polo, Direk Joel, Leo Dominguez, and Arnold Vegafria, ngayon pa lang ay may international festival screening invitations na ang Walang Kawala, kaya bonggang-bongga ang pag-travel in the future, Mama, huh!

Say nga ni Direk Joel, the showing of the film is one his “proudest moments.”
