Being among Top 3 is good enough

His entry in the ongoing Metro Filmfest, Ang Darling Kong Aswang, finished No. 3 Best Picture in last Monday’s Gabi ng Parangal and is safe and secure among the Top 3 moneymakers. (Official results as of Dec. 31: Ang Panday, P58M; Ang Darling Kong Aswang, P56.5M; Shake, Rattle & Roll XI, P53M; I Love You, Goodbye, P51M; Mano Po 6: A Mother’s Love, P25M; Nobody, Nobody But... Juan, P23M; and Wapakman, P2.1M.)

“Good enough,” said Vic Sotto whose M-ZET Productions co-produced Aswang with Orly Ilacad’s OctoArts Films and Antonio P. Tuviera’s APT Entertainment, Inc. “Sobra pa sa sapat ang tuwa ko. Satisfied na ako, happy na ako especially nang makita ko ang kasinghaba na pila. Masaya na ako to see the people na nagtatawanan at nag-i-enjoy sa panonood sa loob ng sinehan, sa mga nagti-text ng congratulations at sa mga tumatawag. ‘Yung award, bonus na lang ‘yon.”

Directed by Tony Reyes and with Cristine Reyes as Vic’s co-star, Aswang is Vic’s 10th Metro Filmfest entry. The nine others, also moneymakers, were two Okay Ka, Fairy Ko flicks, four Enteng Kabisote flicks, Lastikman, Fantastikman and Iskul Bukol 20 Years After. Contrary to popular belief, Aswang doesn’t ride on the popularity of the Twilight/New Moon phenomenon.

“For one thing,” said Vic, “it’s not about vampires but our very own aswang myth.”

Vic is generous that’s why he’s reaping the rewards of good karma. Even after his GMA sitcom Fulhaus (which he himself produced) has been off the air, Vic gave his office staff not only their bonuses but also their 13th-month pay.

“Hindi nagtatagal sa bulsa ko ang pera,” said Vic when asked how much he’s worth now. “I don’t count; I share. Anyway, you can’t bring your money doon sa pupuntahan nating lahat.”

Incidentally, another comedy that you should watch in the Metro Filmfest is the Dolphy starrer Nobody, Nobody But...Juan, directed by Dolphy’s son Eric Quizon who also stars in it as the strict supervisor of a senior-citizen in Chicago where Dolphy plays one of the residents.

One of the funniest scenes shows Dolphy and his fellow inmates in Pampers and diapers staging a strike against Eric’s character who wouldn’t let them watch Wowowee through which Dolphy meets his long-lost ladylove (played by Gloria Romero). Nobody isn’t doing bad contrary to what some people think, so far grossing P23M. Not only good but very good — in any currency.

Vic paid Dolphy a tribute when, asked who his favorite comedian is, he answered without a second thought, “Si Dolphy. He’s my idol.”
