Claudine Barretto on Mel & Joey

Claudine Barretto used to be known as the Kapamilya Princess so when she decided to be a Kapuso, showbiz aficionados can’t help but wonder.

Tonight on GMA 7’s Mel & Joey, learn why Claudine decided to join her husband Raymart Santiago‘s mother studio. In a no-holds-barred interview with hosts Mel Tiangco and Joey de Leon she will divulge her career plans and relate how marriage has changed her life and how.

On Babala, focus is on food poisoning — its symptoms, causes and cure. On Hanep Bahay, we will tour the residence of creative couple Chito and Aleli Salazar built with antique bits and pieces such as a door from Laguna, windows from Iloilo and walls from a demolished school in Cabanatuan.

Is the hairdressing profession merely for female and members of the third sex? Listen to the woes of male parloristas who feel discriminated although they are adept on manicure, pedicure, hair cut and dye and other salon services. This is in the MENgugupit segment.

Mel & Joey pays tribute to Pinoy teenager Emmanuel Bagual who was nominated in the Nobel Prize in Sweden recently for founding the MY Rights (MIND YOUR RIGHTS) that upholds children’s rights.

May kani-kanyang number sina Gloria Diaz, Buboy Garovillo, Randy Santiago, Mark Herras, Ynna Asistio, Jaya, Rufa Mae Quinto, TJ Trinidad, Glaiza de Cstro at Mark Anthony Fernandez.

“I have to say na maganda ang production numbers ng ASAP, but there was a time rin naman na kami ang nasa taas, na-experience namin ’yun. The one thing we lost or we forget is to have fun dahil na-stress kami sa ratings and the show was getting tired. With the new show, we’ll have fun and we’ll just do our own thing. I hope our loyal fans will support and help us. We’re starting again, help us mapasaya uli kayo,” sabi ni Regine.

SOP Ends

“Yes, magpapahinga muna ang aming Sunday variety show after 14 years.

“I wanted to hear,” pag-amin niya.

“I can’t speak for Regine kasi ako lang talaga ang kausap ng TV5. Wala akong alam doon.

A Light of a Million Mornings at Angels Brought Me Here.

Zooperstars on GMA Feb. 28

Beginning Feb. 28, animals will take center stage as you learn about their abilities like you’ve never known before on GMA 7’s Zooperstars.

Hosted by Gelli de Belen, along with Panday Kids’ Julian Trono and Sabrina Man (photo), the animal talent/magazine show puts together six segments to make way for an enjoyable and holistic learning experience.

Can your pet sing, dance, compute, juggle and whatnot? Prove it by competing in Zooperstars, a talent contest judged by animal experts and celebrities.

Then invade the houses of celebrity pet owners in Zooper Sikat. Await a politician’s “painting pig” or know the “famous host” who spoils an Achilles Tang Fish with a 24/7 air conditioner and maid service. Continue meeting other remarkable pets in Zoopah Pets, where the likes of Ava, a wealthy Shih Tzu who threw a grand birthday celebration for the benefit of cats will be featured.

Believing that all pets are priceless, a Lost Pet and Found bulletin was set up as well so masters could not only post their missing pet but also announce successful searches via a heartwarming reunion in the studio.

Certainly, animal discovery would not be complete without the PET Files, where interesting animal trivia abound and Zooprise where a mind-blowing animal like a fish with bones that would not bend or a guinea pig with hair as sharp as that of porcupines is tagged as “animal of the week.”

Zooperstars airs Sundays at 11:15 a.m.

Poor Diva, hindi umepekto ang marami niyang pagsa-sign of the cross.

Tama yung council, mga two or three years pa bago natin malaman kung sino talaga sa Batch 5 ang nagwagi. Sisikat din ba tulad nina Mark Herras, Jennylyn Mercado, Yasmien Kurdi, Kris Bernal, Aljur Abrenica, Jackie Rice sina Sarah at Steven?

“V-day namin sa StarStruck.

24 Oras tops poll

GMA 7’s 24 Oras maintained its lead over its rival primetime newscast based on the Mega Manila TV household ratings data for the period of Jan. 4 to 29 from AGB Nielsen Philippines. The primetime newscast led by 4.6 percent during the first week of January and continued to top the competition throughout the month.

GMA’s Public Affairs programs also posted remarkable leads over the competition during the entire month. Unang Hirit dominated Umagang Kay Ganda with a lead that grew from 0.6 percent to 1.6 percent by the last week of January. Reporter’s Notebook posted a 2.6 lead over The Correspondents from Jan. 4 to 8. Born To Be Wild continued to dominate Probe Profiles/Bandila the entire month, even posting a commanding 4.2 percent lead from Jan. 11 to 15. Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, in turn, was also victorious as its ratings continued its climb the entire January.

Leading the charge is 24 Oras, posting a commanding 29.5 as against the competition’s 27.2 rating points from Jan. 11 to 15. In the succeeding weeks of Jan. 18 to 22 and 25 to 29, 24 Oras’ lead grew to 3.1 rating points.

The latest ratings data further solidifies 24 Oras’ position as the leading and most preferred newscast, powered by the viewers’ unwavering trust in the newscast and in the network.

In a quantitative survey conducted by AGB Nielsen Philippines last September, GMA scored a credibility rating of 68.9 percent, besting its rival’s 45.7 percent. In the same survey, GMA News and Public Affairs personalities topped the list based on appeal, credibility, competence and interest to watch. Jessica Soho led all anchors and reporters in terms of appeal. Mike Enriquez was considered by respondents as the most credible, while Mel Tiangco was said to be the most competent and most interesting to watch. Arnold Clavio and Vicky Morales were also consistently in the Top 5 news anchors across all measured attributes.

The findings underscore 24 Oras’ dominance over the competition. Bannered by the most formidable and credible tandem in local broadcasting today — award-winning broadcast journalists Mike Enriquez and Mel Tiangco and beefed up by the country’s most respected news team that has won local and international honors, GMA News’ 24 Oras is committed to deliver only the untainted truth.

Richard Gutierrez: Full sked after Full House

The GMA romance-comedy Full House (in which he co-stars with Heart Evangelista) is ending soon but Richard Gutierrez’s schedule remains even fuller, prompting him to politely turn down hosting the next season of Survivor Philippines (once hosted by Paolo Bediones who is now with TV5).

Anytime now, Richard will resume playing his usual superhero character in the return engagement of Captain Barbell. He’s also starring in a movie (no title yet) with Claudine Barretto and Anne Curtis in a joint venture between GMA Films and Viva Films, which will be partly shot in California sometime next month.

He has also been named spokesperson of the National Commission on Culture and Arts Festival (NAM-PIAF) 2010, launched in Malacañang Palace with NCCA officials led by executive director Cecile Guidote-Alvarez. A big factor in his selection is his being an “environmental hero” as host of the GMA docu shows Signos, Full Force Nature, Planet Philippines and Ondoy Special which had a great impact in keeping the environment clean and green. Richard assisted in the symbolic lighting of the NAM-PIAF 2010 logo and cutting of the ribbon of the art exhibit billed Ani ng Sining sa Malacañang.

More good news about Richard: The libel case he filed against PEP has been settled with the apology from PEP editor-in-chief Jo-Ann Maglipon. GMA executive Atty. Annette Gozon-Abrogar helped in the amicable settlement. Jo-Ann invited Richard and his parents, Eddie Gutierrez and Annabelle Rama, to the 10th-anniversary party of YES! magazine, sister company of PEP, at the NBC Tent at The Fort, Taguig City, on Feb. 23. The Gutierrezes promised to attend, together with Annabelle’s other talents.

Claudine Barretto Updates

Never daw nag-reach out si Mark sa kanya.

GMA 7 talents endorsing candidates told to go on leave

Television network GMA 7 yesterday took the initiative to call on its talents and showbiz personalities to take a leave of absence if they continue to endorse candidates or political parties during the campaign period.

In a statement, GMA 7 said they have advised their talents to take a leave even if the taping of their participation in the political ads was done before the campaign period started.

The television network added they would also stop airing political ads that showed some of their talents endorsing a candidate or a political party during the campaign period.

“(The) network’s talents who appeared in political ads or advocacy plugs before Feb. 9 are advised to notify the candidates concerned or those responsible for placing these political plugs not to air them during the campaign period,”GMA 7 network said in the statement.

The statement was issued by GMA 7 in the effort to placate increasing concerns over the issues of showbiz personalities endorsing candidates and political parties during the campaign period.

Sectors led by poll watchdog Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) said Republic Act 9006 or the Fair Election Act makes it mandatory for showbiz and media personalities to take a leave of absence from television shows or media outfits while endorsing a candidate or political party.

Malacañang said the PPCRV assessed the issue correctly.

“The PPCRV call appears to be supported both by the law and the Comelec and if that is the case, then it should be heeded,” deputy presidential spokesman Gary Olivar said.

Under the Fair Election Act, “Any mass media columnist, commentator, announcer, reporter, on-air correspondent or personality who is a candidate for any elective public office or is a campaign volunteer for or employed or retained in any capacity by any candidate or political party shall be deemed resigned, if so required by their employer, or shall take a leave of absence from his/her work as such during the campaign period.”

Television network ABS-CBN, for its part, clarified the law would only apply to their regular employees who are endorsing candidates or political parties.

“The provision of the law cited by the PPCRV and Comelec (Commission on Elections) that requires media personalities to either resign or go on leave applies to employees only. Talents are not employees of the network and, therefore, the said provision does not apply to them,” ABS-CBN said in a statement.

The television giant, however, said they have a strict policy against talents using airtime to endorse candidates.

Notwithstanding the provisions of the Fair Election Act, the Comelec yesterday said there is no need for showbiz and media personalities to take a leave of absence.

Comelec Commissioner Rene Sarmiento explained the law generally applies to political candidates who are showbiz personalities themselves.

Sarmiento said these individuals, who can be a candidate, a campaign volunteer or endorser, “shall be deemed resigned” if so required by their employers.

“There are nuances on that issue... There are many gray areas like if a sibling or a relative of a candidate is a celebrity and then we’ll say that they are endorsing a candidate... we might be violating some of their freedoms there,” he said.

“We have to balance the freedom involved of the celebrity endorsers and, at the same time, the election aspect, like will it level the playing field,” Sarmiento said.

Commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal also said “a close examination of the provisions” of the law does not require media personalities to take a leave during the campaign period.

Commissioner Nicodemo Ferrer, on the other hand, said the poll body is studying how to implement the rules on media personalities campaigning for candidates.

Ferrer added the Comelec would come up with rules to avoid confusion.

Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, presidential candidate of the Liberal Party (LP), said he would file a petition before the Supreme Court to clarify the issue.

Aquino, the only brother of popular actress and television host Kris Aquino-Yap, said it would be unfair for other showbiz personalities who volunteered to campaign for politicians without any talent fee.

If the intention of the call was to level the playing field, Aquino said this would not occur since there are candidates, including him, who could not afford to pay the talents and services of celebrities.

“I don’t think that is the intention of the law so we need to clarify this before the Supreme Court,” he said.

Aquino claimed there is a long list of celebrities who volunteered to endorse him but all he could give was a simple “thank you” and his dealing with them was “aboveboard.”

“(My endorsers) are not paid and they are even the ones spending for their transportation, they are the ones who feed me and during our tapings, they lend the equipment. This is really a people’s campaign and it is pure volunteerism on their part,” he said.

Aquino said it would be unfair for the celebrities endorsing him to take a leave of absence “because they will lose a lot.”

Aquino stressed the issues must be defined correctly in fairness to the celebrities concerned.

Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno, however, said the issue would now level the playing field in favor of Gilbert Teodoro, candidate of the administration Lakas-Kampi-CMD.

Kasama niya sina Karen Pagsolingan at Bong Godinez.

“I’ve been begging them to apologize, even before pa sa ginawa nilang pagsira sa pangalan ko.

“Raymart didn’t want me to know while he was figuring out a way with our lawyers to fix it para di na ako mabuwisit at mamoblema ’di ba? I gave these people three months to fix everything.

“Prina-promise nila na they really would leave for d States 2 hav d real owners sign! Last pakiusap nila November last year uuwi raw d owners 2 come home 2 Manila 2 sign d papers na 2x na pinuntahan sa States. But ang galing co’z complete yung papers nila, fake nga lang and its been given to our lawyers Atty. Norby and Atty. Raymond Fortun!

Tapos the kids and their cousins would ask if ok na ba the farm?

Jennylyn Mercado: No quarrel with Ryza

JENNYLYN Mercado is glad that the lead role of a struggling starlet in "Gumapang Ka Sa Lusak" fell on her lap. '"It's an acting piece," she says "Pinapanood nila sa'min ang original movie directed by the late Lino Brocka at mas kumapal na ang story ngayon. My role was originally played by Dina Bonnevie at mas complex na 'yung character ko kasi binigyan ako ng sarili kong family at maraming subplots. We're so poor so gusto kong mag-showbiz. Breadwinner ako at parents ko sina Lotlot de Leon and Julio Diaz. I join a beauty pageant para makilala at may pulitikong gagawin akong kabit, si Al Tantay."

Some folks think she's snubbing Ryza Cenon with whom she had a feud before because of Mark Herras. "Naku, that was years ago. Nagkaayos na kami at nagbebeso kami when we see each other. Exaggerated lang 'yung iba at parang gusto kaming pag-awayin uli."

She's paired with Dennis Trillo who reprises the role first played by Christopher de Leon as a convicted hitman. "The first time we were paired was four years ago in 'Dangal' of 'Now & Forever'. Wala pa kaming mga anak noon. Now, we're more mature and we even have a love scene here na di namin ginawa noon."

GMA tops ratings survey

GMA Network further strengthened its lead in Mega Manila ratings over its rival network for the first month of 2010.

Based on latest TV household population projections from AGB Nielsen, the expanded Mega Manila coverage accounts for 55 percent of all television households in Urban Philippines. Moreover, Mega Manila ratings are now being generated from a bigger panel of 800 TV households.

According to data from AGB Nielsen, GMA Network posted a total day (6 a.m. to 12 midnight) average rating of 17.4 percent for all weekdays from Jan. 1 to 29 as compared to ABS-CBN’s 15.3 percent for Mega Manila households with ratings data from Jan. 24 to 29 based on available overnight ratings.

The Kapuso network’s weekday primetime programs strengthened margins over competition which contributed to its improved block lead in the first month of the year. For the period of Jan. 25 to 29 alone, primetime programs 24 Oras, Darna, The Last Prince, Full House, StarStruck Shoutout and Queen Seon Deok contributed to the 2-point lead in the weekday evening ratings across Mega Manila households with GMA getting 25.6 percent over ABS-CBN’s 23.6 percent.

For the same period, 24 Oras beat TV Patrol by 3.2 rating points with an average of 28.6 percent versus the latter’s 25.4 percent. Darna posted a 32.5 percent average rating, a 3.3-point lead over May Bukas Pa’s 29.2 percent; The Last Prince beat its counterpart (Kung Tayo’y Magkakalayo) with 30.8 percent versus 29.7 percent; StarStruck Shoutout garnered 24.9 percent versus the 19.2 percent of Boys Over Flowers. Queen Seon Deok posted an average of 22.2 percent versus Boys Over Flowers’ 19.2 percent. Full House as well narrowed the lead of its counterpart (PBB Double Up) to only 0.4 percent for the said period.

The weekday ratings also showed that GMA steadily increased its lead in all day parts for the past three weeks. Hence, resulting to a consistently increasing total day average lead week to week where GMA posted a 1.3-point lead for Jan. 11 to 15; 2.4 points for Jan. 18 to 22; and a 3-point lead for Jan. 25 to 29.
