GMA files case against Mo Twister

GMA Network has filed a civil case against Mo Twister for alleged breach of contract, and competitor station TV5, for hiring the host as its talent.

In a 16-page complaint, GMA also asked the Quezon City Regional Trial Court to issue a temporary restraining order to stop the host (Mohan Gumatay in real life) from appearing on the talk show Paparazzi and prevent TV5 from letting him appear in their shows.

According to GMA, it has an existing exclusive talent agreement with Gumatay.

“In utter disregard of, and in open defiance to this negative covenant, defendant Gumatay rendered services to defendant ABC TV5 as talent and initially appeared on ABC TV5 TV show Paparazzi as host on May 15, 2010,” the complaint said.

The case was raffled off to the QCRTC Branch 217 under Presiding Judge Santiago Arenas.

GMA Network claimed the agreement is from May 4, 2009 to May 3, 2010, but that it had the exclusive and irrevocable option to renew the contract.

GMA’s head of talent division Wilma Galvante purportedly wrote Gumatay before the expiration of the contract, informing him of its renewal. But Gumatay allegedly wrote back on May 8 and said he was not renewing the agreement and that he was resigning as host of the Sunday show Showbiz Central.

As early as March, Gumatay wrote GMA, saying he did not want to renew his talent agreement but the network refused to let him go. The network wrote TV5 on March 26 about GMA’s talent agreement with Gumatay.

“Despite receipt of this letter, defendant ABC TV5 engaged the services of defendant Gumatay as talent/host and allowed him to appear as host on its program Paparazzi last May 15, 2010,” the complaint stated.

GMA also asked the court for a writ of preliminary injunction and to order Gumatay to comply with his agreement with the network and stop from being a talent of TV-5.

The network said Gumatay should be ordered to pay P1,040,000 — the amount equal to double his total compensation for one year — and P1-M in exemplary damages. GMA also asked that an order be issued for the host and TV5 to pay P1-M in attorney’s fees and P1-M as litigation expenses.

Cogie Domingo Returns as Gay

COGIE Domingo is back from the U.S. to do another comeback in the indie gay film, "Muli." He and Sid Lucero will play secret lovers whose relationship will last for 40 years. They'll just meet in Baguio every summer. Written by Jerry Gracio (also of "Emir"), the project was conceived with Noel Ferrer as an answer to the so many gay films shown lately that capitalize only on frontal nudity.

"We want a different take, para maiba naman," says Jerry. "'Muli' will answer the question: May gay relationship ba talagang nagtatagal? It shows the greatest arbiter in a relationship is really time. The love story here starts in the 60s. Sid is a seminarian who got involved with the Communist Party so ipapakita rin dito ang nag-ibang pananaw ng society at ng leftist sa gays. Sid inherits an inn in Baguio from his mom and Cogie becomes a guest there at doon nag-start ang affair nila. Sid becomes a teacher and Cogie becomes a lawyer who is a spokesman for the Supreme Court. Cogie gets married to the daughter of a Marcos crony, but every year, nagkikita pa rin sila. Sid also has a regular partner, first si Rocky Salumbides, a mining engineer, then his student, Ardie Bascara.

So we start with Gloria Diaz winning as Miss Universe in 1969."

Jerry did extensive research on this and we heard one of the characters is based on the life of a national artist. "Muli" is produced by Edgar Mangahas, who co-produced the hits "Caregiver" and "Kimmy Dora" and the flop, "Manila" with Piolo Pascual, and directed by Adolf Alix. It will premiere at the Cinemalaya Filmfest in July.

Why did Cogie consent to do a gay movie for his comeback? "The role is good and I find it very challenging. I also believe in the project. This is not really new to me kasi in 'Deathrow,' I was raped in prison. Isa pa, I really missed my work and I'm excited and reading-ready na to act again."

He'll have plenty of kissing scenes with Sid. "Yes, I'm sure iga-guide naman ako nina Direk on how to do it. Pero mas matindi si Sid dito kasi he'll do love scenes with various other guys."

Marian Rivera at Dingdong Dantes Updates

Kasama si Julia Clarete sa pelikulang Emir, considered the biggest original Filipino musical na co-produced ng Cultural Center of the Philippines, Film Development Council of the Philippines at supported ng President’s Social Fund.

Any message for Baron?

“Good luck na lang sa movie mo.”

‘You to Me are Everything’ Hits P82.5 Million in 2 Weeks

GMA Films and Regal Films scored their first blockbuster movie this year as ‘You to Me are Everything’ grossed P82.5 million in 2 weeks.

“You to Me are Everything” is Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera‘s second movie together. They surpassed the box office haul of their first movie team-up, One True Love, which earned P62.42 million in 2008. It’s interesting to note that they clashed with the monster hit movie “Twilight” at that time. This time around, they clashed with Iron Man 2.

“You to Me are Everything” had a debut weekend gross of P48.84 million for the period of May 5 to 9, 2010. It placed second to the Hollywood film Iron Man 2 which garnered P71.65 million that time.

With “You to Me are Everything” current gross of P82.5 million according to third party tabulator Box Office Mojo, can it surpass the P100 million mark in the weeks to come?

Party Pilipinas in Baguio

Rachelle Ann Go admits verbal abuse from former bf

RACHELLE Ann Go guested in the Behind the Wall segment of “Showbiz Central.” She said she's happy to be a Kapuso. "I'm really thankful as I felt the warm welcome of everyone in GMA, from the bosses to my co-stars."

As usual, there were three disguised informants to grill Rachelle. The first one asked if Mark Bautista is wooing her now that they're both on GMA7. "Ano ba? "Mark is a close friend. Barkada, hindi nanliligaw sa'kin."

The second informant asked her if someone special inspires her now. "Maraming special na tao for me, but no particular person, my friends, my family na kahit ano mangyari, nariyan lang sa likod ko. Marami akong lalaking kaibigan pero 'yung boyfriend, wala. Hindi ko hinihintay. Darating na lang 'yan."

The third informant asked her who hurt her the most among her past boyfriends (Christian Bautista or Gab Valenciano)? "It cannot be compared kasi magkaiba sila.

Rachelle was made to guess who the three informants are but she only got one right, singer Jimmy Marquez. She failed to identify her friend Jon Dalusong and her own mom, so she was made to answer the ultimate question: Did she really experience verbal abuse from her last boyfriend? "Do I need to answer this. Siguro... my God... yes, but not naman to the highest level. Kapag nag-aaway kasi ang dalawang tao, it comes to a point na di napipigilan ang sarili. I've moved on."

Bringing Kapuso warmth to Pinoys worldwide

GMA Network’s top-rating shows go global as GMA Pinoy TV and GMA Life TV air the broadcast giant’s top-rating shows that captured the hearts of millions of Filipino homes in the country.

From classics to adaptations to originals brought to life by some of the industry’s geniuses, these well-loved Kapuso shows are among the top picks of Filipinos abroad who subscribe to GMA Pinoy TV, the network’s flagship international channel, and second Kapuso international channel GMA Life TV.

“It’s really hard to be away from home, to be on your own in a place where you only have yourself to lean on. It’s not like what we usually see on TV and movies. Thank goodness there’s GMA Pinoy TV. Watching Filipino shows keeps me sane in this urban jungle,” says medical professional Judith, a single Filipina based in New York who also includes 24 Oras, Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho and Eat, Bulaga! among her favorite GMA Pinoy TV shows.

“And of course there’s Dingdong Dantes as the Pinoy Sergio who completely stole my heart in Marimar. I’m watching out for their next project, as well as other offerings from GMA Pinoy TV,” says Judith.

Judith is just one of the Filipinos in the US and other parts of the globe who subscribe to, fell in love with, and make the flagship international channel of GMA Network part of their daily lives.

Launched in 2005, GMA Pinoy TV is continuously making waves in the international scene. It is available in all US states and territories including Hawaii, Guam and Saipan, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the British Indian Ocean Territory of Diego Garcia, Middle East, North Africa and Europe. It was recently introduced by the MTS Allstream, Inc. in Canada.

GMA Life TV, in turn, was launched in 2008 and features a different brand of programming that ably complements that of GMA Pinoy TV. It is available in the US, Canada, Japan, Guam, Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Middle East, North Africa and Europe.

Subscribers are currently at 250,000 for GMA Pinoy TV and some 120,000 for GMA Life TV, as of the First Quarter of 2010. This is quite an impressive increase since GMA Pinoy TV and GMA Life TV were just launched in five years and three years ago, respectively. This number will soon increase as both channels will be available in more areas in the coming quarters of 2010.

Both channels are now carried by Time Warner Cable and Brighthouse Systems in California, in all Comcast systems in Northern California, by Entouch systems in Texas, and by Brighthouse systems in Florida.

The successful launch rollout was recently capped off with a concert-cum-fashion show at the jam-packed Santa Clara Convention in Santa Clara, California.

Dubbed Celebrate Life, the grand event that had everybody going home with fond memories featured Kyla and Jay-R, Dennis Trillo, Mark Herras, Wilma Doesnt, Nonito Donaire Jr. and Steven Silva.

Aside from that, GMA Pinoy TV joined the Sinulog celebrations in New Zealand. The crowd of 7,000 had a chance to meet and greet German “Kuya Germs” Moreno.

In Australia, Rhian Ramos had Filipinos screaming when she joined the largest gathering of Filipinos in Blacktown, while Allan K. made everybody go gaga at the Premium Philippine Fiesta, the biggest and grandest annual gathering of Filipinos in Tokyo.

Still in the spirit of being every Filipino’s Kapuso, GMA Pinoy TV also sponsored several projects, and contributed to the success of Filipinos who brought the flag abroad.

GMA Pinoy TV provided extensive media coverage as the RP Gilas team played against different teams in the Middle East, and produced a TV special that chronicled the team’s triumph in the games. It was once more a partner in the Australian and US legs of the national team’s series of trainings abroad.

The flagship international channel also supported Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton’s bid to win the WBA junior featherweight belt.

It raffled off a free round-trip ticket to a lucky subscriber in the Middle East, and also turned over a TV set at the customer lounge of the Philippine Embassy in Singapore. On the other hand, some Access TV call center agents spent time with Sheena Halili and Rainier Castillo, and some won a trip for two to Bohol, Boracay, Palawan and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Lucky Pinoys in Qatar and Guam, meanwhile, underwent free call center training, and had the opportunity of meeting Rainier and Sheena.

Of late, GMA Pinoy TV launched Pinoy Inbox, a community billboard for subscribers to post their announcements, plug events, place pre and post-event details, send information, invitations, for free.

Outside of the network’s two international channels, GMA programs are also seen in various parts of the world via GMA Worldwide, Inc., a subsidiary that focuses on foreign program acquisitions and international distribution of GMA-produced shows.

It handles worldwide distribution of various GMA TV series, dubbed in foreign languages, which are now being aired in Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hawaii, Canada, US, Singapore, Vietnam, Korea, New Zealand, Middle East, Brunei, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, as well as in the in-flight movie choices of Saudia Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Emirates and Gulf Air.

GMA Worldwide has also inked a deal with an Internet Protocol TV company that carries over 1,500 hours of archived GMA programs available to worldwide subscribers, and is in the final stages of contract execution with Nigeria and China, and under negotiations with Ghana, Namibia, Gambia and Zambia.

Such events and projects only show that GMA Pinoy TV and GMA Life TV go beyond simply providing news and entertainment. They truly echo GMA Network’s battle cry of being a Kapuso in word and deed by giving warmth to Filipinos all over the world.

GMA maintains Mega Manila TV ratings lead in April

BACKED by a strong line-up of afternoon and primetime programs, GMA Network kept its lead in viewer-rich Mega Manila in April, according to survey results from the more widely recognized TV ratings data supplier AGB Nielsen Philippines.

GMA Network posted an average audience share of 34.6 percent, 0.9 percentage points higher than competition’s 33.7 percent (data from April 25-30 are based on overnight ratings).

During the month, GMA had 6 entries in the list of overall top 10 programs. The fantasy series “The Last Prince,” starred by young heartthrobs Aljur Abrenica and Kris Bernal, and the first “kantaserye” in the country, “Diva,” figured strongly in the top five.

Other programs that made it to the top 10 include the primetime Koreanovela “Queen Seon Deok,” banner newscast “24 Oras,” the action-packed “Panday Kids” led by child actor Buboy Villar, and weekend primetime public affairs show “Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho.”

The longest running noontime show, “Eat Bulaga,” shared the top spot with competition's “Showtime” among daytime programs, while the series, “First Time,” featuring young stars Joshua Dionisio, Barbie Forteza, and Jhake Vargas was also among the top five daytime shows.

GMA’s afternoon drama soaps including “Gumapang Ka Sa Lusak,” led by Dennis Trillo and Jennylyn Mercado, as well as “Ina, Kasusuklaman Ba Kita?” starred by real-life mother and daughter Jean and Jennica Garcia, likewise made it to the top ten list of daytime programs.

Meanwhile, GMA Network’s News and Public Affairs programs remained the viewers’ choice in Mega Manila, with “24 Oras” topping the list, followed by “Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho” and “Imbestigador” in the 3rd and 4th spots. GMA News and Public Affairs is set to deliver the biggest, most comprehensive 2010 election coverage dubbed, Eleksyon 2010.

The Network also increased its lead in another key area in April - Urban North/Central Luzon -- where GMA posted an average audience share of 40.6 percent, higher by 8.4 percentage points than ABS-CBN’s 32.2 percent (data up to April 24 only). The gap was higher than GMA’s lead of 7 percentage points over ABS-CBN in Urban North/Central Luzon in March.

GMA Network Chairman, President and CEO Felipe L. Gozon expects that the Network’s lead in TV ratings will increase with the launch of new programs in the coming months.

“We are launching new programs that our viewers will surely enjoy watching. With these new shows, we are hopeful that the gap in TV ratings will once again widen,” Gozon said.

Among the programs set to launch on GMA Network in the coming months include the Barbie Forteza-starrer “Pilyang Kerubin,” “Survivor Philippines: Celebrity Edition” with host Richard Gutierrez, Heart Evangelista’s “Langit sa Piling Mo,” “Endless Love” with Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes, and a whole lot more.

“Aljur to me... He’s young, he’s fresh at saka ’yun na nga parang interesting because for the first time in my life, he’s probably like the closest person to my age. I feel like a teenager again,” say ni Rhian.

Rhian is 19-years-old while Aljur is 20-years-old, kaya super-excited na ang young actress sa bagong makaka-partner.

Senator Bong Revilla denied speculations na mag-o-over-the-bakod siya from GMA-7 to ABS-CBN.

While he doesn’t deny that he is in friendly relations with ABS-CBN, he would still consider himself a Kapuso in heart and soul.

What he admitted is that he is considering an offer na gumawa ng movie with Star Cinema, film arm ng ABS-CBN.

Sen.

He also said na he heard that ABS-CBN is preparing another project for Jolo.

Over at GMA-7, patuloy namang umeere ang programang dati niyang hinu-host, ang Kap’s Amazing Stories.

This time, his son Ram, his youngest by wife Lani Mercado, along with a girl na kasing-edad niya, ang naghu-host ng programa.

* * *

Bilang senatoriable, patuloy ang pamamayagpag ni Sen. Bong bilang No. 1.

Ang cute ng commercial niya sa tv reminding voters na he is no. 8 sa balota.

* * *

“I miss acting,” ani Sen. Bong. “Kaya, pagkatapos ng elections, baka magsimula agad akong gumawa ng movie.

“I’d resume my tv work, too, although of course, uunahin ko ang mga nabinbin kong trabaho bilang senador dahil sa pangangampanya.

Dingdong, Marian movie mobbed

THE SM theatre where the premiere of "You to Me Are Everything" was held Dingdongpiccouldn't accommodate the huge crowd that came to watch. So many people weren't able to get in, but those who did weren't disappointed as it's a feel good movie aimed to please viewers. The story is tailor made for the Dingdong Dantes-Marian Rivera love team and their fans were shrieking with delight during the film's various "kilig" moments.

Marian is Iska, a mountain maiden in the strawberry fields of Benguet who inherits a huge fortune in Manila from her wealthy father. She lives by herself in this huge mansion formerly owned by the family of Rafael (Dingdong), whose congressman dad is jailed due to corruption making Rafael a pauper. The drunken Rafael goes home to their old house one night and Marian is shocked to see him inside her room. But she listens to his drunken monologue and takes pity on him, even taking him to his new humbler residence the next morning. Iska is like a fish out of water in her new affluent surroundings and she needs a business manager to guide her. Guess who she picks to do this? Rafael, of course. He takes the job only because he intends to borrow a huge amount from her later on to start his own business. But you know how these stories go, one thing leads to another for the obligatory happily ever after kind of ending.

The story is another take on the age old Cinderella story, with Iska having two scheming stepsisters (Krista Sullivan and Andrea Torres), but the difference is that her stepmom (Pinky Amador) is not evil. As usual, there's this big ballroom scene where the wicked stepsisters are expecting Iska to make a fool of herself in a tacky "sagala" gown. Unknown to them, Rafael has taken her to a stylist and she arrives looking resplendent and gorgeous in a stunning red gown.

There's really no big conflict in the movie. Both Rafael and Iska are already committed to someone else (Dingdong to Isabel Oli and Marian to AJ Dee), but even these hindrances are quickly taken out of the way. In the end, we realize that the conflict is not really provided by some external forces, as is usually the case in love stories like this. The conflicts here are more of an internal nature, emanating from within the core of the lead characters themselves. Will Rafael ever find some mercy in his heart to forgive his erring dad and realize what a positive influence Iska is in his life? Will Iska be willing to give up all the luxuries she has tasted in the city for a simpler life in the mountains where she grew up, including the city boy who has captured her heart?

Director Mark Reyes makes sure his leads are both sympathetic characters and he's served well by Dingdong and Marian who both give very endearing performances. Dingdong is really one of the most dashing leading men we have these days. As for Marian, we're just uncomfortable at times with the way Iska's jologs ways are laid on too thick. She has such a heart of gold she'll even go out of her way to help a kitten that can't get down from a tree and, instead of punishing her mean stepsisters, she even rewards them with a huge part of her inheritance. But it's to Marian's credit that she's able to credibly carry all the ridiculous things she was made to do in the movie, including a scene where she suddenly sings and dances in a serious boardroom conference. Technical credits are fine and the rustic beauty of Benguet is captured vividly on the big screen.

Sabi ni Richard sa kanyang acceptance speech, “Planet Philippines is indeed a labor of love for nature and a celebration of wisdom for future generations.”

Sabi nito sa kanyang Twitter account: “Congratulations to Chard and the whole team for bagging the award! Weeeeee!!! Planet Philippines is a celebration of wisdom and a piece of art that Richard and the whole team work hard for.”

Literal ngang a matter of life and death.

At nagkatotoo nga.

Sexy talk with Alfred Vargas

Politics is not alien territory to Alfred Vargas, one of the four actors (the others are Ara Mina, Roderick Paulate and Glenda Garcia) in a field of 45 candidates for the five council seats in the second district of Quezon City.

“I had my first taste of politics when I was in Grade 3 in Ateneo where I studied from prep to college,” revealed Alfred who’s running with the SB (Sonny Belmonte) Team, with incumbent Q.C. Vice Mayor Herbert Bautista as mayoral bet and Joy Belmonte as running mate, on the local level and supporting Presidentiable Gibo Teodoro of the administration’s Lakas-Kampi-CDM. “I ran for sergeant-at-arms. From grade school until college, I was an official in the student government,” added Alfred who graduated with a degree in Management & Economics.

That answers questions from those not-in-the-know why Alfred willingly put on hold showbiz work in favor of a shot at an elective office.

In the two months that he has been on the campaign trail, gaining not just pounds (15 so far) but more followers, Alfred said that he has learned one thing — “The simplest folks are the happiest folks. I envy them.”

He also found out what the two most pressing problems in Q.C.’s second district are: “informal” settlers (yes, squatters) and unemployment.

After the elections, Alfred plans to take up a private (meaning one-on-one) crash course in Public Administration and start shooting the indie film Ang Paglilitis ni Bonifacio, to be directed by Mario O’Hara for Boy Abunda’s company. Also starring Coco Martin as Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, the film will be shown in this year’s Cinemalaya in which Boy’s company’s first venture, Astig, won for GB Sampedro the Best Director Award.

Taking time out from the back-breaking campaign, Alfred sat over lunch last Saturday at 8 Spices with some movie reporters.

Instead of further talking politics, Funfare did “sexy talk” with Alfred so his fans will not forget that, besides being a politico, he’s first and foremost a sexy drama actor.

“When do I feel sexy?” asked Alfred. “When I am confident. If smart is sexy, so is confidence.”

“In the first place, hindi po ako sinipa sa GMA Network. Nag-resign lang ako sa Party Pilipinas, pero I still do Mel and Joey and Tropang Potchi,” mariing pahayag ni Direk Louie.
